The Queen in Italy
Monday 19 September 2022 has been marked as a national bank holiday for the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth visited Italy several times during her lifetime. As a princess, she travelled to Rome in 1951 and paid a visit to the Colosseum, watched a horse race on the Appian Way and celebrated her 25th birthday with a party at Hadrian’s Villa before heading up to Florence.
Her first visit back to Italy as Queen was in 1961 where she visited Rome, Florence, Turin, and Venice – including a night-time ride on a gondola.
